Summer fellowships help support students’ internships

McDaniel’s Center for Experience and Opportunity (CEO) awarded fellowships to five students to help defray the cost of their internships at various locations across the country.

Yelli Coulibaly of Silver Spring, Md., a rising sophomore majoring in Political Science with a specialization in International Studies and a minor in Spanish, has worked as a summer fellow for Ashwani Jain, a former Obama administration and campaign official, who was an at-large candidate for county council in Montgomery County, Md.

At McDaniel, Coulibaly serves as vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and is a member of the Student Government Association, Hispano-Latinx Alliance and Africa’s Legacy student organization. She is also an admissions ambassador and works in the athletic department.

Maggie Hart of South Orange, N.J., a rising senior Psychology major, is spending 10 weeks this summer working at The Legal Aid Society in New York, a public defense law firm for low-income individuals. She is part of the Intern Investigator Program, which falls under the criminal defense umbrella. After receiving training in computer forensics, ethics in law and how to interview witnesses, she is working alongside a fellow undergraduate partner, as well as an investigator and lawyer, on misdemeanor cases.

A member of the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity at McDaniel, she served as an executive board member for the College’s Honors Program, as well as delegate chair for the Maryland Student Legislature. She is also president of the Ultimate Frisbee club and participates in the rock-climbing club, Green Terror Programs and Heroes Helping Hopkins. In addition, she works as a Leadership Engagement Peer for the College’s Office of Student Engagement. As a freshman, she earned The Duke of Edinburgh’s bronze award for her achievement in community service, physical fitness, special skills and adventurous journey.

Kayla McDaniel of Baltimore, a rising sophomore, is participating in the Summer Urological Research Experience (SURE) at the Brady Institute at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The SURE program provides undergraduate students interested in pre-medicine or biomedical sciences with experience in the areas of urological and cancer research.

McDaniel, who graduated from Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School in Baltimore in 2017, is active at the College with the Black Student Union and Africa’s Legacy student organization. In addition, she is a member of the College’s cheerleading team and the Student Alumni Council.

Armaan Qasba, of Glenelg, Md., a rising junior majoring in Biology, is doing an internship at the Institute for Cell Engineering with Johns Hopkins University.

Daniel Smith of Lancaster, Pa., a rising senior with a triple major in Accounting Economics, Business Administration and German, is spending the summer as an intern at JP Morgan Chase & Co. in Newark, Del., as part of the Global Finance and Business Management Program under the Corporate and Investment Banking division. His team falls under the Treasury line-of-business, and Smith is working with partners across the firm to provide financial and strategic analysis, oversight and coordination of budgeting and forecasting.

At McDaniel, Smith is vice president of McDaniel College’s Honors Program, works as an admissions ambassador and is involved with the Ultimate Frisbee club. A Global Fellow, he was president of the German Club and served as both a senator and executive board member of the Student Government Association. He also participated in the Model European Union.

He was a recipient of the Outstanding Achievement in Accounting Award from the Maryland Association of CPAs as a sophomore and earned The Duke of Edinburgh’s bronze award as a freshman for his achievement in community service, physical fitness, special skills and adventurous journey.

The Summer Intern Fellowship is awarded by the CEO at McDaniel College to provide competitive awards to help defray the cost of summer internships for current students. Recipients represent McDaniel College and the CEO at internship sites throughout the United States and the world.
