What led you to your field of study?

I was led to the field of speech-language pathology as a first-year student in college. I enrolled as a Physical Therapy major but was intrigued by a peer’s interest in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. I met with my college advisor, learned more about the profession and made the decision to change my major. I specialize in communication and swallowing disorders relevant to the pediatric population. I have spent the last several years of my clinical experiences working with medically complex pediatric patient populations and supporting their caregivers in the advancement of their communication and swallowing disorders.

Where were you before you came to McDaniel?

I have practiced as a speech-language pathologist for 21 years, served as a clinical supervisor for 19 years, and taught as an adjunct professor for eight years. I have worked in public schools, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient facilities, an inpatient rehab unit, and acute care units. Before coming to McDaniel, I was a senior speech-language pathologist at a pediatric hospital in Michigan.

What inspired you most to become part of the Hill?

I chose McDaniel College as a place to work because I was excited about the opportunity to contribute to the development of the SLP academic and clinical program. I appreciated the intimacy and beauty of the campus, as well as the excitement the faculty and staff had for the successful launch of the SLP program. I was inspired by the vision outlined for the SLP program and believed that my prior experiences complement the program and align with its established vision.

What lasting lessons do you hope students take away from your classes?

The lasting lesson that I hope students take away from my classes is that becoming a clinician begins in the classroom, where they are active participants in the learning process, and then they translate their knowledge into each clinical experience. I hope students feel safe engaging in the learning process by answering questions and accepting corrective feedback to solidify concepts needed for clinical experiences.
