Students perform in musical performances throughout May

McDaniel College students participate in various spring musical performances throughout the month of May, which are free and open to the public. For more information, call 410-857-2599.

McDaniel students perform with the Westminster Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, May 4, 3 p.m., at Carroll Community College, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster, Md. The concert is free and open to the public. The Westminster Symphony Orchestra is comprised of McDaniel College and Carroll Community College students, as well as community musicians. The orchestra is under the direction of Linda Kirkpatrick, senior lecturer in music at McDaniel College.

Students at McDaniel perform selections from renowned operas and Broadway musicals in "Singing on Stage" on Sunday, May 5, 7 p.m., in WMC Alumni Hall under the direction of Kyle Engler, senior lecturer in Music. Operatic works include Mozart's “Magic Flute” and “Cosi fan tutti” and Verdi’s “La Traviata,” plus Broadway selections from “Candide,” “On the Town,” “Chicago,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Hamilton” and “Dear Evan Hansen.”

An Evening of Madrigals on Monday, May 6, 7:30 p.m., in Baker Chapel features The Madrigal Singers, McDaniel’s premier vocal ensemble, under the direction of Margaret Boudreaux, director of choral activities at the College. The group perform a cappella in addition to Renaissance pieces, contemporary jazz vocal music and other selections. Audience participation is encouraged throughout the performance.

Jazz Night, directed by Music lecturer Tim Jenkins, is Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. in WMC Alumni Hall. The concert features diverse styles of jazz, including classic big band swing, bebop, Latin, Funk, Jazz-rock and classic blues.  Selections to be performed are “Come To Baby Do” ( Inez James/Sydney Miller), “Palladium” (Wayne Shorter, arranged by Tim Jenkins), “Solsbury Hill” (Peter Gabriel, arranged by Tim Jenkins), “Japanese Denim” (Daniel Caesar, arranged by Tim Jenkins), “Bemsha Swing” (Thelonious Monk, arranged by Bill Holman), “Wizard Of Finance” (Parliament/Funkadelic), “Fables Of Faubus” (Charles Mingus, arranged by Sy Johnson), “You Do Something to Me” (Cole Porter), “Dream A Little Dream Of Me” (Gus Kahn), “So Mournful the Elegy, So Comforting the Hymn” (Jonas H. Peterson, arranged by Tim Jenkins), “Something's Different” (Bo Eckard, arranged by Tim Jenkins), and an untitled original composition composed by the McDaniel College Jazz Ensemble.

The College Band, directed by Linda Kirkpatrick, senior lecturer in Music, performs Friday, May 10, 7 p.m., in WMC Alumni Hall, featuring nearly 50 musicians, including McDaniel students, as well as McDaniel faculty members, band alumni and community musicians, performing everything from classical to pops. Selections include Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever March,” Bernstein’s “Divertimento,” Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium,” Bourgeois’ “Serenade,” Gillingham’s “Be Thou My Vision,” Pasek and Paul’s “Dear Evan Hansen,” and Zimmer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean, At World’s End,” arranged by Jay Bocook.
