Gately grew up in Lutherville, Maryland, and graduated from Loyola High School before coming to McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Communication in 1983. He later earned multiple certifications from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania through the certified employee benefit specialist, retirement plans associate, and group benefits associate programs.

As executive director and banker with J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Baltimore, Gately advises successful individuals and families on sophisticated wealth management needs. He has nearly four decades of experience in providing services across the entire financial spectrum, including investing, banking, lending, and planning, with previous advisory and leadership roles at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and Wells Fargo Advisors. For nearly two decades, he also provided financial services to employers and individuals nationwide as the founder of The Gately Group, an employee benefit and financial services company.

He said that community service is central to his life. As a black belt, Gately has trained at-risk youth and Baltimore City police officers in martial arts. Currently, he is president of School of The Way, a mentoring and martial arts organization focused on youth development. He also has volunteered with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Maryland.

Gately is also a member of the Baltimore Country Club and serves as a trustee at Loyola High School and on the board for the American Heart Association’s Greater Maryland division.
