A group of seven McDaniel College students participated in "Independent Higher Education Day," organized by the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA), in Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Accompanied by McDaniel College President Julia Jasken, Associate Vice President for Administration and Government Relations Jenni Glennon, Social Work Professor Jim Kunz, and Political Science Lecturer Patrick Murray, the McDaniel students from Anne Arundel, Carroll, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Talbot, and Worcester counties met with lawmakers and attended a luncheon where President Jasken presented an award to Maryland State Delegate Adrienne Jones, former speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates.

This annual event highlights the partnership between Maryland's independent institutions and the State of Maryland, including the Sellinger Program, which provides state funding, specifically in the form of financial aid, to independent, nonprofit colleges and universities in Maryland, including McDaniel.

“MICUA’s celebration to recognize the successful partnership between the State of Maryland and its independent colleges and universities is an appropriate occasion to commend these institutions and recognize the significant contributions they make to Maryland’s system of higher education,” Maryland Governor Wes Moore said.

“Maryland’s independent colleges and universities provide broad public benefits by contributing to social mobility, economic prosperity, workforce development, scientific discoveries, global competitiveness, civic participation, and service to community.”
