McDaniel welcomes new full-time faculty members

New full-time faculty members at McDaniel include Daniel Boches, assistant professor of Sociology, Hyunjae Jeon, assistant professor of Kinesiology, and Svetlana Tokareva, assistant professor of Marketing. Additionally, Laura Bitto '04 has been promoted to assistant professor of Education.

Laura Bitto '04, assistant professor of Education, Daniel Boches, assistant professor of Sociology, Hyunjae Jeon, assistant professor of Kinesiology, and Svetlana Tokareva, assistant professor of Marketing, are new full-time faculty members at McDaniel.

McDaniel College announces four new full-time faculty members.

Daniel Boches, assistant professor of Sociology, Hyunjae Jeon, assistant professor of Kinesiology, and Svetlana Tokareva, assistant professor of Marketing, have recently joined the college. Additionally, Laura Bitto '04 has been promoted to assistant professor of Education.

Laura Bitto

Laura Bitto '04, assistant professor of Education

Laura Bitto, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the college in 2004, is an assistant professor of Education. She previously served as a lecturer in McDaniel’s Education Department and program coordinator in Graduate and Professional Studies.

She is a mathematics teacher educator and researcher, focused on developing and supporting mathematics teacher leaders. Prior to working in higher education, she was an elementary school teacher in Hampton City Schools in Hampton, Virginia, and served as a mathematics coach for K-12 teachers.

Bitto went on to earn both a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction as a K-8 Mathematics Specialist and a Ph.D. in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership with a focus on Mathematics Education from the College of William and Mary. She taught in the School of Education at the College of William and Mary, as well as at George Mason University prior to returning to McDaniel to teach in 2021.

She is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, and the American Educational Research Association, among others.

Daniel Boches

Daniel Boches, assistant professor of Sociology

Daniel Boches, whose research focuses on the interplay between deviance, law, and medical sociology, is an assistant professor of Sociology. He teaches Criminology and Introduction to Sociology at McDaniel.

His work has appeared in journals, such as Deviant Behavior and RSF: The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences. He has also been invited to present at various conferences and annual meetings.

Boches holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Temple University, master’s degree in Sociology from the University of New Hampshire, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Georgia, where he received numerous awards and grants, including the 2023 certificate of excellence from the Department of Sociology at the University of Georgia.

He is a member of the American Sociological Association, American Society of Criminology, Eastern Sociological Society, and the Law and Society Association.

Hyunjae Jeon

Hyunjae Jeon, assistant professor of Kinesiology

Hyunjae Jeon has joined the college as an assistant professor of Kinesiology.

Jeon previously served as an assistant professor in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Evansville in Indiana, where he taught courses in human anatomy and physiology and oversaw the Dunigan Movement Analysis Lab focusing on human movement rehabilitation and athletic injuries.

He has had articles published in the Journal of Athletic Training, International Journal of Athletic Therapy & Training, and the Journal of Sports Rehabilitation and has served as a reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals. He has also lectured nationally and internationally on athletic injuries and human movement rehabilitation and has received multiple research grants and awards.

A certified athletic trainer, he holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where his dissertation was titled “Diagnostic Ultrasound Assessment of Femoral Cartilage Health in Individuals with Patellofemoral Pain.” He also received a master’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and both a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and master’s degree in Sports Biomechanics and Rehabilitation from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.

Svetlana Tokareva

Svetlana Tokareva, assistant professor of Marketing

Svetlana Tokareva has joined McDaniel as an assistant professor of Marketing

Tokareva teaches in the Economics and Business Administration Department and her research areas of interest include brand management, marketing strategy, and product recalls.

She comes to McDaniel after earning a Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Memphis. Previously, she worked for Kohler as a senior marketing analyst and for Kraft Foods, Mondelez, and Coca-Cola as a brand manager. She is a member of the American Marketing Association and the Society for Marketing Advances.

Tokareva also holds a master’s degree in Marketing from the University of Tampa and both a master’s degree in Management and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Moscow Aviation Institute (National Research University) in Moscow, Russia.
