    Under the Sea at the McDaniel College Reading Clinic

    Each summer, graduate students in McDaniel’s Reading Specialist: Literacy Leadership program are involved with the McDaniel College Reading Clinic, a comprehensive four-week experience providing reading and writing assistance to elementary school-aged students enrolled in Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS).

    Two former Writing for Children and Young Adults graduate students find success in the publishing world

    Two former students in McDaniel’s Writing for Children and Young Adults (WCYA) graduate certificate program have found success in the publishing world. B. Sharise Moore, who specialized in WCYA while pursuing her master’s degree from McDaniel’s Innovations in Teaching and Learning (formerly Curriculum and Instruction) graduate program, had a debut fantasy novel, “Dr. Marvellus Djinn’s Odd Scholars,” released at the end of May. Jared Reck, who completed coursework in WCYA and currently teaches as an online adjunct lecturer in the program, has had “Donuts and Other Proclamations of Love” published with Knopf Books for Young Readers by Penguin Random House.

    McDaniel College Board of Trustees elects two new members

    McDaniel College has named two new members to its board of trustees. Jill Kortvelesy Mennicken of Laurel, N.Y., a 1981 alumna of the college, served as senior director of business development at Forrest Solutions, a Manhattan-based staffing and outsourcing company. Aaron Slaughter of Silver Spring, Md., a 2010 alumnus of the college, is a senior manager at Withum, a national top-ranking public accounting firm.

    Class of 2021 celebrated during outdoor graduation at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium

    Outside among family and friends, the McDaniel College Class of 2021 – 587 bachelor’s and master’s candidates in all – crossed the stage to receive their degrees May 22 during the college’s 151st Commencement ceremony. Mary Lynn Durham '70 and Bill Roj '70, who were recognized with honorary Doctors of Laws degrees, served as the commencement speakers.

    Top undergraduate and graduate student awards presented at 2021 Commencement

    Three top student awards, the Argonaut Award for achieving the highest cumulative grade-point average, the Edith Farr Ridington Writing Award, and the B. Jill Brooks Hodge Professional Development Award, were presented May 22 at McDaniel College’s 151st Commencement.

    McDaniel College holds Commencement ceremony for Class of 2020

    A year after they were supposed to cross the stage, the McDaniel College Class of 2020 was invited back to the Hill on Saturday, May 22, for a special Commencement ceremony honoring 325 bachelor’s and 230 master’s graduates. The 555 graduates, who were honored last spring with a virtual celebration due to the COVID-19 pandemic, were welcomed back to campus for their hard-earned day in the spotlight.

    McDaniel College announces Commencement speakers and honorary degree recipients for both the 2020 and 2021 ceremonies to be held on Saturday, May 22. The 2020 Commencement Speaker is McDaniel College President Roger N. Casey, the college’s ninth president who is retiring at the end of the 2020-2021 academic year. The 2021 Commencement Speakers are Mary Lynn Durham and Bill Roj, both 1970 alumni, who supported the renovation of the college’s new Roj Student Center.     McDaniel College has announced its plans for Fall 2021, including a return to near-normal operations and face-to-face instruction for undergraduate students. McDaniel is planning for a primarily in-person experience with more than 90 percent of undergraduate classes to be offered as traditional in-person classes and 100 percent of labs. The other 10 percent of classes will mostly be offered in a hybrid format, which includes an in-person component.
