Samantha Wilson, a senior at McDaniel College, has been named a Fulbright finalist for an English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) in the West African nation of Côte d'Ivoire or Ivory Coast. Wilson of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., is a double major in French and Political Science with a specialization in International Studies.
Senior Alex Tolle won a national award to represent region II at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) arts leadership program — and then, while at the national arts festival, earned a top award for her arts leadership and advocacy.
McDaniel College junior Atticus Rice of Portland, Ore., has been named a 2018 Newman Civic Fellow, one of 268 student leaders nationwide recognized by Campus Compact.
McDaniel senior Alex Tolle is the winner of the National Award for Arts Leadership for the Kennedy Center American Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Region II and will be one of only eight people from across the country to participate in a special arts leadership program at the national festival.
McDaniel’s most recent Gilman Scholarship honoree, senior Grace Hounsou, arrived in the U.S. from her native Benin in West Africa only six short years ago at the age of 16. Since then, she’s graduated from high school while serving as sole guardian of her two younger siblings, become financially independent, earned her U.S. citizenship and worked her way to and through college.
Four McDaniel students have received prestigious Fulbright awards for the 2017–2018 academic year. Seniors Ema Barnes and Jaime Calderon and graduate students Mariah Ligas and Maggie Myers have been named Fulbright finalists for English Teaching Assistantships (ETA) to teach English in the Czech Republic, Andorra, Romania and South Korea, respectively.
Jocelyn Diaz, a junior from Reisterstown, Md., has earned a Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Dijon, France, this summer. She is the fifth McDaniel College student to receive the prestigious award.
Associate professor and chair of Communication & Cinema Jonathan Slade ’88 returned to the scene of his early career in the television industry when he joined 24 other professors from colleges and universities nationwide selected for a prestigious fellowship to the 2016 Television Academy Foundation Faculty Seminar in Los Angeles.
