    Five professors have been named Charles A. Boehlke, Jr., Engaged Faculty Fellows in recognition of their exceptional commitment to their students, not only in classrooms and research labs but also with career and internship experiences. The Charles A. Boehlke, Jr., Engaged Faculty Fellows Award was established with a gift from Charles A. Boehlke, Jr., a 1978 alumnus of the college and current member of the McDaniel Board of Trustees.

    McDaniel College has named Jennifer Glennon as the associate vice president of administration and Rose Mercier as director of human resources. Glennon '04 and Mercier '14 are both alumna of the McDaniel College master's degree program in Human Resources Development, now Human Resources Management.

    Social Work professor Jim Kunz and Accounting professor Kerry Duvall have been selected to present in the Centennial Conference’s four-part speaker series, Pillars of Excellence. Kunz and Duvall have collaborated on efforts to educate students on the topic of financial literacy, including workshops to help students better understand their personal finances.

    Art History professor Gretchen McKay shared her knowledge and experience in teaching in an online environment during a virtual symposium focused on leading during the pandemic. The session for department chairs, program directors, and academic leaders from higher education institutions across the nation was organized by DeverJustice LLC and Ithaka S+R in partnership with The Chronicle of Higher Education.

    Melissa Thomas M.S. '05, coordinator of the Equity and Excellence in Education graduate certificate program and an adjunct professor at McDaniel College, has been selected to present at the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) Convention on Oct. 16. Thomas, who earned her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction (now Innovations in Teaching and Learning), is also an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) resource teacher in Carroll County Public Schools and a Maryland State Department of Education Master Teacher.

    Cinema professor wins Emmy award for documentary

    Jonathan Slade '88, professor of Communication & Cinema, received his seventh Emmy award for his two-hour 2019 documentary, “Made Possible By Viewers Like You: 50 Years of Maryland Public Television” at the 62nd National Capital Chesapeake Bay ceremony on Aug. 8. The program, which debuted on Maryland Public Television in August 2019, won for outstanding arts/entertainment special during the virtual event in Washington, D.C.

    Chemistry professor’s cancer drug clears final hurdle: FDA approval

    The FDA just approved cedazuridine, the cancer drug Chemistry professor Dana Ferraris invented more than a decade ago when he worked in the biotech industry as a medicinal chemist. In its approval announcement, the agency says the combination of cedazuridine with the cancer drug decitabine in pill form is “an important advance in treatment options for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a type of blood cancer, who previously needed to visit a health care facility to receive intravenous treatment.”
