Ceremony celebrates completion of Merritt Hall renovation

The $4.3 million renovation of Merritt Hall, supported by a more than $2 million grant from the State of Maryland and private donations, has created state-of-the-art learning spaces to accommodate new master’s degrees in Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology, along with a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. Merritt Hall also houses McDaniel’s Education and Psychology departments.

An invitation-only ceremony celebrating the completion of the renovation of Merritt Hall was held Friday, Oct. 2, in advance of Homecoming weekend.

The $4.3 million renovation, supported by a more than $2 million grant from the State of Maryland, has created state-of-the-art learning spaces to accommodate the college’s new master’s degrees in Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology, along with a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. 

Merritt Hall also houses McDaniel’s Education and Psychology departments.

President Emerita Joan Develin Coley and her late husband, Trustee Emeritus M. Lee Rice '48 donated $165,000 for an education lab and equipment on the second floor of Merritt Hall in honor of Professor Emeritus Francis “Skip” Fennell. 

Beth Heckert Tevis '77, M.Ed. '84, and her husband, Jack Tevis, also provided a $1 million gift to support the Education department to honor Coley and Fennell. 

Marshall Craft Associates of Baltimore served as the architect and Wagman Construction of York, Pennsylvania, was the contractor.
