The McDaniel College community celebrated the power of philanthropy through Thank a Giver (TAG) Day. This annual event, held by the McDaniel College Student Alumni Council on April 28, 2021, allowed the McDaniel community to recognize all of the college’s donors.
McDaniel College student organizations are aiming to help the homeless through the Griswold-Zepp Awards. The student-run organizations submitted proposals centered on giving back to the community through food drives, creating bundles of necessities for those in need, and bringing awareness to nonprofit organizations.
McDaniel College junior Khadijatou Diop hopes to become a more versatile French teacher after earning a $5,000 Gilman Scholarship to study abroad through the virtual French immersion program at Université Laval in Canada. Diop, a French major with a minor in Secondary Education from Columbia, Md., was one of 2,386 undergraduate students from across the nation selected to participate in the prestigious United States Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program.
McDaniel College announces Commencement speakers and honorary degree recipients for both the 2020 and 2021 ceremonies to be held on Saturday, May 22. The 2020 Commencement Speaker is McDaniel College President Roger N. Casey, the college’s ninth president who is retiring at the end of the 2020-2021 academic year. The 2021 Commencement Speakers are Mary Lynn Durham and Bill Roj, both 1970 alumni, who supported the renovation of the college’s new Roj Student Center. A new partnership gives McDaniel undergraduate students in the Economics and Business Administration department, as well as eligible alumni, preferred admission to four master’s degree programs at Duquesne’s Palumbo-Donahue School of Business.
On April 11, 24 students were inducted into McDaniel College’s Delta of Maryland Chapter of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. Alumnus Gerald H. Miller ‘63, who previously served as director of Michigan’s largest state agency, the Department of Social Services, was also inducted.
Five professors have been named Charles A. Boehlke, Jr., Engaged Faculty Fellows in recognition of their exceptional commitment to their students, not only in classrooms and research labs but also with career and internship experiences. The Charles A. Boehlke, Jr., Engaged Faculty Fellows Award was established with a gift from Charles A. Boehlke, Jr., a 1978 alumnus of the college and current member of the McDaniel Board of Trustees.
McDaniel College students perform in the radio play “Twisted Tales of Poe,” which is based on the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Directed by Theatre Arts faculty member Gené Fouché, the performance will be broadcast on McDaniel College’s student-run radio station, Green Terror Radio (WGTR), on Friday, April 30 and Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m.
McDaniel College selects 21 students into the inaugural class of the National Security Fellows Program. The National Security Fellows Program pairs with any program of study and provides McDaniel students with robust knowledge, skills, and experience in national security as well as the ability to specialize in an area of interest, such as interstate conflict, intra-state political violence, cybersecurity, ethics, and human rights.
McDaniel Free Press co-editors-in-chief learned best practices in connecting local topics to global impacts during a virtual webinar organized by the Council on Foreign Relations. Juniors Molly Sherman and Ciara O’Brien were able to have Mark Seibel, technology policy editor at The Washington Post, and Carla Anne Robbins, adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and former deputy editorial page editor at The New York Times, at their fingertips thanks to the Feb. 25 webinar dedicated to student journalists.
