Education graduates recognized as rising stars

Eight graduates who majored in Elementary Education or minored in PreK-12 or Secondary Education were recognized as rising stars in education. Kate Cramer, Emma Lindell, Brittany Mitchell, Jessica Raver, Carlena Sheeto, Heather Shockley, and Jada Stump were named Teachers of Promise by the Maryland State Department of Education, while Carly Ludwig was selected as a 2023 Distinguished Teacher Candidate by the Maryland Association of Teacher Educators (MATE).

Before graduating on May 20, eight students majoring in Elementary Education or minoring in PreK-12 or Secondary Education were recognized as rising stars in education.

Teachers of Promise

The Maryland State Department of Education named seven Education graduates as Teachers of Promise.

McDaniel’s Teachers of Promise awardees were:

  • Kate Cramer of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, who graduated summa cum laude with Honors in Art and a minor in PreK-12 Education, as well as Art History and European Studies. Cramer also received The Argonaut Award for the highest cumulative GPA at graduation. She has accepted a full-time teaching position with Carroll County Public Schools at Liberty High School in Eldersburg, Maryland;
  • Emma Lindell of Frederick, Maryland, who graduated with Honors in English and a minor in Secondary Education. Lindell has accepted a full-time teaching position with Frederick County Public Schools at Crestwood Middle School in Frederick, Maryland;
  • Brittany Mitchell of Westminster, Maryland, who graduated summa cum laude with Honors in Elementary Education. Mitchell has accepted a full-time teaching position with Carroll County Public Schools at Winfield Elementary School in Windsor Mill, Maryland;
  • Jessica Raver of Westminster, Maryland, who graduated summa cum laude with Honors in Elementary Education. Raver accepted a full-time teaching position with Carroll County Public Schools at Runnymede Elementary School in Westminster, Maryland;
  • Carlena Sheeto of Manchester, Maryland, who graduated cum laude with a major in Elementary Education. Sheeto has accepted a full-time teaching position with Carroll County Public Schools at Ebb Valley Elementary School in Manchester, Maryland;
  • Heather Shockley of Union Bridge, Maryland, who graduated summa cum laude with Honors in Elementary Education. Shockley has accepted a full-time teaching position with Carroll County Public Schools at Taneytown Elementary School;
  • Jada Stump of Abingdon, Maryland, who graduated cum laude with a major in Elementary Education. Stump has accepted a full-time teaching position with Harford County Public Schools at Meadowvale Elementary School in Havre de Grace, Maryland.
2022 alums on the Teachers of Promise Panel

These students, nominated based on GPA, service, leadership, and their application, are provided with a mentor to guide them through their transition from college to the classroom.

They also had the opportunity to participate in the Teachers of Promise Institute, where 2022 alums Hannah Miller, Zachary Ruggerie, and Gillian Scott served on the New Teachers Panel.

Miller, Ruggerie, and Scott were named 2022 Teachers of Promise and are currently teaching in Carroll County Public Schools.

Distinguished Teacher Candidate

2023 graduate Carly Ludwig

Carly Ludwig was named a Distinguished Teacher Candidate by the Maryland Association of Teacher Educators (MATE).

Colleges in Maryland and Washington, D.C., are invited annually to select one exemplary teacher candidate from each institution and Ludwig was one of 29 students chosen to receive this honor for 2023.

Ludwig graduated summa cum laude with Honors in Elementary Education and a minor in Theatre Arts. She also earned The Michael and Polly Beaver Award for Excellence in Education and The Lynn F. Gruber Medal for proficiency in extracurricular activities.

During her time at the college, Ludwig was involved as a student ambassador, peer mentor, and Student Accessibility and Support Services tutor. In addition, she was a member of the Student Alumni Council and the Alpha Psi Omega national theatre honor society, Alpha Lambda Delta national honor society, and Pi Gamma Mu international honor society in the social sciences.

Ludwig has accepted a full-time teaching position with Carroll County Public Schools at Eldersburg Elementary School, where she also completed her student teaching internship.
