Second annual Academic Symposium on Monday, May 1, showcases the liberal arts in action

McDaniel's Academic Symposium includes a robust program of innovative and inspiring presentations. Throughout the day, McDaniel students, faculty, and staff showcase their original research, scholarship, and creative achievements. Plus, two special events take place including a Conversation with Carroll County Leaders and a Keynote Lunch with Wall Street Journal reporter and author Melissa Korn (advance registration is required).

On Monday, May 1, McDaniel hosts the college's second annual Academic Symposium, showcasing the original research, scholarship, and creative achievements of McDaniel students, faculty, and staff. A robust program of innovative and inspiring presentations highlight the liberal arts in action.

Various academic departments are represented throughout the day, including Art, Biology, Chemistry, Communication, Computer Science, Education, English, Environmental Studies, History, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and World Languages, Literatures & Cultures, among others.

An afternoon Service Fair organized by the Center for Experience and Opportunity (CEO) includes on-site service projects hosted by student groups and community partners.

Conversation with Carroll County Leaders Advance registration is required.

A breakfast panel features a Conversation with Carroll County Leaders. McDaniel College President Julia Jasken is joined by Carroll Community College President James Ball, Carroll County Public Schools Superintendent Cynthia McCabe, County Administrator Roberta Windham, Westminster City Administrator Sara Imhulse, and Westminster Police Chief Thomas Ledwell in a conversation about how they are working together to enhance and strengthen Carroll County.

The discussion is moderated by Westminster Mayor Mona Becker. Questions for the participants can be submitted in advance by emailing ocm@mcdaniel.edu.

Keynote Lunch with Wall Street Journal reporter Melissa Korn, co-author of "UNACCEPTABLE: Privilege, Deceit and the Making of the College Admissions Scandal," which has been described as “the riveting true story behind the Varsity Blues college admissions scandal, a cautionary tale of parenting gone wrong, the system that enabled families to veer so far off course, and the mastermind who made it all happen.” She writes about higher education, covering college admissions, university finances and campus culture, for The Wall Street Journal, a role that she has held since 2014.

 Interview will be led by McDaniel College History professor Bryn Upton and attendees will receive a copy of “UNACCEPTABLE: Privilege, Deceit and the Making of the College Admissions Scandal."
